Adelheid Brunner is mute, but writes and draws instead and her ambition is to own one
thousand matchboxes. Her grandmother cannot make sense of the child, and takes her to Dr
Asperger’s paediatric clinic. During Adelheid’s time as an in-patient, she makes herself
invisible, hiding in cupboards with her pet rat, Franz Joseph, and listening in on conversations
