About the event
Set in the Stroud valleys Mary Ann Sate – Imbecile is a first-hand retelling of the
story of elderly maidservant Mary Ann, who recounts the poisonous rivalry between
her employer’s two sons and the dreadful choice, which rendered the world she had
come to know undone.
In this fictional memoir, Stroud based novelist Alice Jolly brings to life the
mesmerising voice of Mary Ann Sate to redraw history from the perspective of
